Grants and Programs

  • Acorn Grants

Up to $1,500, awarded to two recipients every eight weeks

We named this grant after the acorn, because small things carry big potential. An Acorn Grant addresses needs that might seem modest but can genuinely change what a woodworker is able to do. A new blade, a piece of adaptive equipment, the right tool at the right time.

Acorn Grants are open to individual woodworkers with a disability as defined by the ADA, supported by appropriate documentation. This grant is for individuals only. Organizations and programs should see the Taproot Grant.

Only one KMWDF application may be active at a time.

  • Mighty Oak Grant

Up to $10,000, awarded once per quarter

The Mighty Oak Grant is for woodworkers who need more than a single tool to move forward.

Named for what an acorn eventually becomes, this grant supports shop buildouts, specialized equipment, adaptive tools, and other investments that take time and real money to achieve.

Open to individual woodworkers with an ADA-qualifying disability and appropriate documentation. For organizations and programs, see the Taproot Grant.

Only one KMWDF application may be active at a time.

  • Taproot Grant

For nonprofits, schools, charities, and vocational programs

The taproot is the part of a tree you never see. It anchors everything, reaches deeper than any other root, and makes the growth above ground possible. This grant is named for the organizations that do that kind of work in their communities, often without enough recognition or resources.

The Taproot Grant has no fixed dollar amount. The KMWDF board works directly with each qualifying organization to understand their needs and assembles whatever support we can, whether that is funding, in-kind tool donations, connections to our sponsor and retail network, or a combination of all three.

To qualify, your organization must serve woodworkers with disabilities and be a registered nonprofit or charity, an accredited school or educational program, or a vocational or workforce training program.

You will need to submit: your organization's 501(c)(3) determination letter, a current Board of Directors listing, your Mission Statement, and a cover letter from an authorized representative explaining your needs and how KMWDF's support would be used. The person submitting the application must be authorized to apply on the organization's behalf.

  • Assisted Woodworkers Program

For woodworkers with disabilities who need hands-on help

Sometimes what a woodworker needs most is another set of skilled hands or a mentor who understands adaptive techniques. The Assisted Woodworkers Program connects woodworkers with disabilities to KMWDF volunteers who can provide in-person workshop help, remote mentorship via video call, adaptive equipment guidance, project support, and community.

  • Volunteer with KMWDF

For skilled woodworkers who want to give back

Our volunteers make the Assisted Woodworkers Program possible. If you have woodworking skills to share, whether locally or remotely, there is a place for you here. Volunteers provide in-person workshop assistance, remote skills mentorship, adaptive equipment consultation, and project collaboration.

  • Partnerships & Donors

For businesses, brands, and individuals who want to go deeper

KMWDF partners with tool manufacturers, retailers, woodworking brands, and mission-aligned organizations to expand what we can offer the woodworkers we serve. Partnerships may include in-kind donations, sponsored grant programs, co-branded content and events, and organizational financial support.
